On your web hosting services, when you ftp login to server to perform files maintenance, you are require to get know the file permission and directory permission. Setting the wrong access permission will cause files and directory cannot get updated, and php scripts can’t make changes to those files as well. Wrong files permission also mean security risk. Overall, you need to set the access permission by user group, divided into OWNER PERMISSION, GROUP PERMISSION, and PUBLIC PERMISSION.
Directory permission 755 means write permission to owner only, and no permission given to group and public to write to directory. This is the default setting for most of your ftp web files and directory, means you as the owner can write to the directory and gain full access and control.
Directory permission 777 is risky as its allow write permission to all, including public and group user. If you want to set directory permission to 777, double check you are doing it right and grant it the the right directory always.
