Hostgator magento hosting & installation? Not sure either hostgator shared hosting will be able to host magento ecommerce site or not? The answer can be found here in this hostgatorreview.org website. For beginning, we had search the magento homepage for confirmation and requirement. After double checked, we are sure that magento e-commerce site can be setup at cpanel hosting with the latest PHP version running at server, and shell access is optional. At magento website, we had found thread that shows magento script can be hosted in hostgator web hosting.
To install magento at hostgator hosting, you will need to download the latest magento script, unzip, change its .htaccess file setting, upload to hostgator server and later create a new mysql database and proceed with online installation process. Before you proceed to magento online installation, make sure you set the folder permission according to magento setup requirement. Run the install.php and complete the magento website installationa setup process. If you facing any problem or error, you can post it here or post it at magento website for solution.
We recommend hostgator cpanel hosting for magento web hosting, from $4.95 per month and lower if you use the hostgator coupon for 20% discount!

magento can be setup at hostgator hosting, regardless there is secure shell access to server or not. If you have shell access, then you can issue the tar and bitserve command during magento installation via shell access.
Alternatively you can upload the unzip magento files to server ducument directory, this is recommended to most windows user. You can complete the magento installation without SSH shell access with this method.

Magento 1.4 works out-of-the-box on a HostGator shared hosting account. I did not have to modify any files or permissions. I have put 3 stores into production without very few hiccups. Let me know if there are any issues with installing on HostGator.
I have documented a successful install here: http://blakeurmos.com/magento-1-4-on-hostgator-tutorial-and-screencast/
Hope this helps.

yes, hostgator magento installation is manually done by user.
Unlike bluehost hosting they have magento installer added to their simplescripts installer.
